Nokia Closes Site, Slashes Jobs as Part of Reorg

 

 

Communications behemoth Nokia announced this week that it will close its Turku site in Finland and slash an estimated 615 jobs all in the name of reorganization.

According to a statement released, Nokia plans to close its Turku site and relocate those activities predominantly in Salo, Finaland and displace the 220 employees who will be affected by the closing to other Nokia sites either at Salo or in the capital are in Finland.

Some 450 employees are expected to be affected as part of its changes in the sales and marketing division, approximately 130 employees from its Nokia Research Center and some 35 employees in its global process operations department.

The changes are said to come into effect by end January, 2009.

"Today's changes are part of Nokia's constant renewal where it is important to be close to our customers and ensure that our people are able to focus on the key business priorities. Also, our aim is to find alternative work within Nokia for as many employees as possible," said Juha Äkräs, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Nokia.
