10 Tech Companies Make it into “Clean & Green Watch 2007” Report

The Clean & Green (C&G) Watch 2007 report has ranked 10 technology companies as top Asian companies actively involved in being environmentally friendly.

Conducted by the Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA) and CLSA Limited, the C&G Watch 2007 surveys and ranks environmental awareness of major Asian enterprises from top executives, the companies’ understanding and response to environmental issues, the relevant policy declarations to investors and the surrounding communities, as well as the companies’ future projections.

Out of the list of 30, the 10 technology companies that made the cut include Samsung, NEC, Sharp, Fuji Film, Hynix Semiconductor, United Microelectronics, Taiwan Semiconductor, ZyXEL Communications, Ibiden and Nanya Printed Circuit Board.

Other verticals surveyed were Financial Services, Automotive, Power & Gas and Conglomerates.

ZyXEL, which was ranked second place, is a Taiwan based broadband access solutions provider.
In a statement released last week, the organisation said that being socially responsible is part of ZyXEL’s core corporate values and it has always strived to be a green enterprise.

ZyXEL said it not only ensures that its operations comply fully with the three EU directives - WEEE (Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and the recent EuP (Eco-Design Requirements for Energy Using Products), but also enforces the policy when dealing with suppliers. In order to realize the “green management” standard, ZyXEL management organized a “Coordinated Information System” to handle “cradle to grave” stages such as material supply, manufacturing, assembly, transportation, and the use and decommission of its products for environmental care.

The report stated that Asian corporations, by and large, seem unaware of the issues and risks with 42 percent choosing to not respond to the C&G survey.
