If the rumour mills are to believed, two weeks from now Google will launch its own branded mobile phone in India, Europe and the US. And if the rumours are true, thenthe Gphone will be an open source phone powered by Google’s own operating system.
According to reports, Google is working with Taiwan based HTC to bring out a prototype of the phone in early or mid September. It is currently looking at more than a dozen HTC model and will zero in on one soon.
It is said the phone will have a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail and the calendar app. If the phone turns out to be a reality, then Google will probably sell the phone for less than USD 100 and will be targeted at the USD 100 laptop.
However the mobile sector is luring Google like anything. It is the fastest growing sector globally. With tariffs falling and features increasing, mobiles have grown in appeal and are considered the future of computing. |
