Zmanda Names Pete Childers CEO

Open Source Software Company, Zmanda has appointed former Red Hat executive, Pete Childers, as the company's new chief executive officer.

"Open source continues to re-define customer value across the software industry, moving beyond the Linux operating system to applications at all levels of use by the enterprise, small business, education and the public sector," said Childers. "Zmanda's backup and recovery solutions represent classic open source disruption, offering proven, commercial-grade solutions via simplified subscription purchase at a fraction of the cost of legacy proprietary backup products. I am honoured to join Zmanda as it capitalises on its leadership in the continuing software revolution that open source is catalysing."

Prior to joining Zmanda, Pete held executive leadership positions in major business units at Red Hat, most recently as vice president of Online Strategy and Operations. From 1998 to 2006, he was vice president of Red Hat's Global Learning Services (GLS), leading the global teams that established Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) as the premier Linux certification and one of Red Hat's most successful brands. GLS today is the world's largest provider of Linux and open source training and certification, one of the five largest business lines in all of open source, and Red Hat's largest line of business after its Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system. Prior to Red Hat, Pete managed professional services at Seagate Software's network and storage management group (acquired by Veritas) and consulted for network hardware, network management software, and telecommunications companies. He holds degrees from Yale and Duke and has engaged in venture advising and board service in software, learning and energy.

Founding CEO Chander Kant will serve as the company's chief technology officer. "Pete has demonstrated time and again that he can build and lead industry-shaping businesses, and we are extremely pleased that he has joined the strong management team at Zmanda," said Kant. "Zmanda has tremendous momentum, with its solutions being widely adopted for hassle-free, affordable data backup. The company benefits from an active open source community and a growing commercial business, and Pete is an ideal leader for Zmanda as it becomes further established as one of the premier open source players."
