Microsoft may have never been known as a games developer and most of its attempts at building a successful gaming brand met with naught with Sony and Nintendo overselling their gaming consoles.
Now that ahs changed. According to a new data by NPD Group, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 by a ratio of 2 to 1 in the US.
The trick? Reduced price of the XBox. Back in August, Microsoft had reduced the price of their console to try to compete with Nintendo and Sony. Although Nintendo is still the top player in the US, the surprise has been Sony being overtaken by Microsoft. Sales of Microsoft’s XBox are expected to increase in the September due to the release of Halo 3, the final game in the Halo trilogy.
The big surge in software sales lead to almost USD 1 billion spent in the gaming industry in America for the month of August. Even with the software surge, all consoles had fewer sales than the previous month apart from Microsoft. |
