Asustek to Launch Low-priced PCs Based on Intel's Classmate PC

Taiwan's Asustek is planning to release a series of low-priced personal computers based on Intel Corp's Classmate PC platform in the second half of 2007. This launch is reportedly to compete with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative, in which Taiwan's Quanta Computer plays an integral role.

Quanta Computer has said that it will launch more than 10 million OLPCs in the first year after their introduction.

It is also reported that the deal between O2 Asia and Asustek for handset manufacturing may go amuck as Quanta is said to bag the deal.

Asustek declined to comment on speculation.

The rumours doing the rounds indicates that Asustek cannot meet O2 Asia's performance and shipments schedule requirements for the company's two 3G handsets (Zinc and Graphite), thus there will be a cancellation of the agreement.

On the other hand, Asustek wants to become a well-known notebook brand in the US and, according to some media reports, plans to start selling its laptops through Best Buy retail network in the US.
