The Eclipse Foundation has initiated a new top level project – the Eclipse Modelling Project – focusing on the evolution and promotion of model-based development technologies within the Eclipse community by providing a unified set of modeling frameworks, tooling and standards implementation. The project will be led by Richard Gronback of Borland and O D Mercks of IBM, and will be supported by Borland, Compuware, IBM, ILOG, Omondo and Oracle.
Other projects will also be introduced under the banner of the Eclipse Modeling Project, namely:
Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF): a modeling framework with code generation facility for building tools and other applications based on a structure data model.
Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF): which provides a generative component and runtime infrastructure for developing graphical editors based on EMF and GEF.
Unified Modeling Language 2.0 (UML2): an EMF based implementation of the UML 2.x metamodel for the Eclipse platform.
Generative Modeling Tools: a research-oriented project focused on producing prototypes in the area of Model Driven Engineering (MDE).
