Mylar is History, Welcome Mylyn

Mik Kersten has announced that the Mylar project has been renamed to Mylyn, owing to the "complexities regarding the assertion of clear ownership of the Mylar name". The Eclipse Foundation is currently in a process of re-writing its trademark guidelines to Eclipse project names as trademarks of the Eclipse Foundation. The project is also being moved from the Eclipse Technology Project to the Tools Project.

"In addition to being a simple, unique and only a two-letter difference from the old name, it has a connotation that’s closely related to the ideas behind the technology," said Kersten. "I believe that this name will serve well at identifying the project in the long run while providing the easiest transition from the old name. In addition, we’ll finally stop confusing kids Googling for the Mylar film when doing science fair projects."

Undertaking a refactoring of a project name is no mean task, admits Kersten. The rename has already happened in the source code and the web site names are underway. This has an impact on the package names, and the Rename FAQ admitted that there is a possibility that this change will be disruptive to users and adopters. The process is being hurried so that it is completed in time for Europa release, when adopters will have to now port from the Mylar 1.0 to the Mylyn 2.0 APIs.

"As we looked at the Mylar name, we decided that renaming the project would be the best long-term decision for the project, its community and its adopters. I have no doubt that there will be some short-term annoyances and I apologize to all impacted. But once the decision was made, getting it done in time for Europa definitely made the most sense," said Mike Milinkovich in a blog post. "But in the end, Mik and his team are moving forward and this project remains one of the coolest things happening at Eclipse," he added.
