It's that time of the year again! There is just about a month left for the Europa release chain, preparations are on full swing, as the Eclipse community gears up for no less that 20 releases this time around!
Denis Roy has announced that he's already caught up in the whirlwind, with getting the infrastructure ready as 21 projects gear up to release new software at the same time. "New releases from heavyweight projects like the CDT, WebTools and Eclipse itself are major events here in Eclipseland, so you can imagine the chaos of releasing 21 projects at the same time as our site struggles to keep up with hundreds of thousands of download requests," he says.
While Roy compares the experience to Mozilla having major releases of Firefox and Thunderbird at the same time, he says that the webmasters luckily have the last year's Callisto experience to lead them through. He says that while more bandwidth and tweaked TCP stacks are crucial, the key to ensuring smooth distribution of files will be the mirror sites, without which getting your bits would be not just more difficult, but also expensive.
In a different note, Ian Skerrett, has already listed out his favourites in the release chain. "Some of my favourites include DLTK and their Ruby support, Mylar is always cool! SWT support for Vista and WPF, some of the new server side services in Equinox, and there seems to be a lot of interest in SOA Tools," adding that he is on the look out for 5-7 key "cool new projects" that can be highlighted at the launch. Any opinions?
