Install And Update: Call for Help

Bjorn-Freeman Benson's statement that "Eclipse is You" has enough people sitting up and taking notice. Now it seems is the time to stand up and take action! Dejan Glozic has put up an SOS to the community for fixing the outstanding bugs in the Update Manager.

New Provisioning effort is underway in the Equinox Incubator and there are the deliverables for Eclipse 3.3 and Europa release to lose sleep over. And the Install/Update component has lost some of its most active members (including Glozic). This in Glozic's own words mean, "we must be pragmatic when it comes to fixing Update defects: you (community), people who are directly affected (product teams) need to give us a hand by debugging the problem, doing some investigation and suggesting possible patches. "

Glozic suggests that if you have a long standing Update problem and it effects your project or product, rather than juts wait for it to be fixed, spend some time investigating and attaching a patch for it. He also offers a plan, which is:

Take a look at the Update inbox (using this query will help)
Pick a bug that you would really like to see fixed and that has enough steps to be reproducible (but call it first so that others don't investigate the same problem)
Pick a fairly recent build (M6+) and set it up for Update development using these instructions (read under 'Feature-based self-hosting')
Try to pinpoint the problem; if you feel confident, try to fix it
If it seems to work, post a patch to the bug report

Glozic adds that they are not really "looking for a 'till death do as part' kind of commitment" but rather a pragmatic investment in solving the problems that concerns you, as much as everyone else.
