Bob Goodman on the Eclipse Ajax Toolkit Framework

The AJAX Toolkit Framework (ATF) is a subproject of WTP and is under incubation. The Framework provides an extensible framework and exemplary tools for building IDEs for the many different AJAX runtime offerings (Dojo, Zimbra, Rico, etc) in the market. Tools built upon these frameworks will initially include enhanced JavaScript editing features such as edit-time syntax checking; an embedded Mozilla web browser; an embedded DOM browser; and an embedded JavaScript debugger.

Says Bob Goodman, the Project Lead for ATF, "ATF is an integrated development environment framwork for Ajax developers. The idea is we build the tools to meet the Ajax developer needs, and then runtime providers can plug into that and have an IDE for their runtime."

An additional and unique aspect of the framework is the Personality Builder function, which assists in the construction of arbitrary AJAX runtime frameworks, thus allowing those runtimes to be used with ATF tools. Another unique aspect is that the applications can run directly from the file system, as they are mostly JavaScript. Further, says Goodman in a conversation with Wayne Beaton, ATF allows you to point a debugger to any live site, and debug it.

ATF is a relatively new project, and as such has had a low profile. However, efforts are now being made to raise the profile. The problem, says Gooman is that the Ajax community has not quite bitten off the idea of an IDE yet--this is not just ATF, but rather the whole idea of using an IDE. "The reason why we are doing AFT is that we want to produce an integrated environment," he adds.

One of the biggest new feature in the ATF has been the recently added MAC OS support. According to Goodman, in the future, ATF is planning to have a generic runtime support.
