NetBeans Tries to Get One Up Over Eclipse with CDC

Sun and the NetBeans community have announced the availability of NetBeans Mobility Pack for Connected Device Configuration (CDC) 5.5 for developing applications for devices such as full-featured smart phones. NetBeans also is being fitted with a plug-in for ALM, which could be a precursor to a full-scale NetBeans ALM initiative.

Featuring code contributions from Ricoh, the CDC pack provides for visual design and development of Java ME (Java Platform Micro Edition) applications for devices using CDC. The CDC technology features an embedded Java solution for smart phones, set-top boxes, and multifunction peripherals.

Dan Roberts, Sun’s Director of Developer Tools Marketing, claims that CDC is designed to run on systems with more powerful processor and additional memory than standard phones used for voice calls, and that NetBeans offers support for CDC that Eclipse lacks. “This is a significant area of leadership for NetBeans in the Java ME space. Eclipse doesn't really have support at all for CDC, so this isn't an area that they're investing significant resources in," he said.

But spokespersons from the Foundation clarify that Eclipse supports CDC in its Mobile Tools for Java Platform. The purpose of the project is to develop both frameworks that can be extended by tool vendors and tools that can be used by third party mobile java application developers. Mobile Java domain contains several combinations for configuration (CLDC and CDC) and profile (MIDP, Foundation Profile and Personal Profile). Currently the most common combination is CLDC+MIDP.0.7

Further, Eclipse and Nokia are working on the eRCP Project. Devices like Nokia Series 80 will support both.

In a related development, Intland Software, has developed a plug-in for its Java-based CodeBeamer ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) platform. The open-source plug-in links to the NetBeans IDE.

Roberts commented that while they recognise the importance of ALM in the industry, nothing concrete has been planned yet. Eclipse on the other hand, has had an ALM project (the Application Lifecycle Framework) under development for a while now.
