Bioclipse Double Whammy at JAX Innovation Awards 2006
Bioclipse doubled their winnings at the JAX Innovation Awards 2006, when they walked away with the 3rd prize and the Audience Award. The jury, comprising experts such as Daniel Adelhardt (Sun Java Ambassador), Adam Bien (IT consultant, Java Magazin author), Erich Gamma (IBM Distinguished Engineer, Eclipse Java Development Tools Project Lead), Sebastian Meyen (Editor in Chief of the Java Magazin, Program Chair JAX) and Bola Rotibi (Analyst at Ovum), selected Bioclipse for the third prize out of ten finalists.

Bioclipse’s entry utilized the Eclipse framework for constructing an open source, Java-based universal tool platform tailored against life- and bioscience based on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) by providing:
  • An extendable core object design and navigator, custom-tailored for handling biological and chemical entities by providing eclipse extension points.
  • Reference extensions for molecules, proteins, sequences (DNA/RNA/proteins), and spectra including I/O, wizards, convertors, dedicated editors, and analysis tools.
  • 2D-editor for molecules.
  • 3D-visualization for molecules and proteins.
  • Editing, visualization, and analysis of sequences.
  • Visualization and analysis of spectra.
  • RSS-viewer supporting the publishing of semantic chemical and biological information on the web.

Bioclipse’s ultimate goal was to integrate all fields of life-science into a single framework utilizing the Eclipse plugin architecture, and to provide extension points tailored against bioscience as well as high quality implementations.

After having won a total of 3,000 euro, the company says it will use the prize money to fund meetings, workshops and other events supporting the development of Bioclipse.
