Ericsson Launches IMS-ecosystem on Eclipse Platform
Ericsson has launched the IMS eco-system on the Eclipse platform as part of its Mobility World developers program. According to Ericsson, the initiative is aimed to accelerate the creation of innovative new applications and services, drive user demand for IMS enabled networks and create further revenue opportunities for operators. The company claims it’s an example of using Eclipse to provide complete end-to-end tools for Application Developers.
IMS is the Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem defining a generic architecture for offering Voice over IP and multimedia services. IMS was first specified by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP/3GPP2) and is now being embraced by other standards bodies, including ETSI/TISPAN. Multiple access types are supported, including GSM/WCDMA, CDMA2000, wireline broadband access and WLAN. IMS-based services will enable person-to-person and person-to-content communications in a variety of modes – including voice, text, pictures and video, or any combination of these – in a highly personalized and controlled way.
Through the IMS eco-system initiative, Ericsson is planning to expand its support for the developers' community to develop IMS based applications. Application developers can take advantage of Ericsson's IMS based solutions, as well as the Ericsson Service Development Studio (SDS), the development and end-to-end testing tool based on Eclipse Technology.
Kurt Sillen, VP, Ericsson Mobility World, says: "The eco-system for IMS applications will give operators access to a portfolio of IMS based applications and gives application developers a chance to work closely with Ericsson and gain exposure to Ericsson customers worldwide."
